DESTINATION SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka has a recorded history of over 2,500 years. Sri lanka is one of the countries which can boast of 23 centuries of unbroken historical record. Irrigation, too, occupied an unique position in ancient Sri Lanka. The island was then known as the 'Granary of the East'.

Paradise is perhaps the best word to describe the land - Sri Lanka - also known as the Land of Lotus Eaters - is a serene, tropical island of golden beaches and blue waters. Famed for the amazing diversity of our culture, the natural beauty of the landscape and a complex history dating back to 543 BC, this country is truly amazing. One can choose from a variety of activities from lazing on the beach to diving in coral reefs, observing the wildlife, mountain hikes through tea estates or wandering through the ruins of ancient temples and palaces...and the list goes on and on.

Sri Lanka's classical architecture, sculpture and painting is predominantly Buddhist. Colonial remnants includes Dutch forts, canal and churches and British residences, clubs and court-houses. Galle is the finest colonial city on the island.

Traditional dancing has many regional variations. Folk theatre combines dance, masked drama, drumming and exorcism rituals to vividly recreate Sri Lankan folklore. Woodcarving, weaving, pottery and metalwork are all highly developed crafts. Sri Lanka is especially renowned for its gems, known from ancient times for it's cats eyes, rubies and many other gems. Ratnapura is the centre of Sri Lanka's gem trade.
