In 1854, the inaugural train in Eastern India ran from Howrah to Pandua in Hooghly. The
railways have come a long way since then. The Indian Railway has several divisions of
which the Eastern Railway and the South Eastern Railway are headquartered in Kolkata.
There are two major railway stations in Kolkata - Howrah and Sealdah. Both Howrah and
Sealdah have two terminals each. So it's best to check in advance the station and the
terminal where your train will depart / arrive.
The Rajdhani Express connects Howrah and Sealdah to New Delhi.
All the major Indian cities are connected by fast trains. Air-conditioned coaches are
comfortable and convenient. Railway reservations are computerized and it is advisable to
book tickets in advance. There are several railway reservation offices in the city.

Railway Reservation Offices:
Rail reservation offices are located at Howrah Railway Station, Sealdah Railway
Station, Fairlie Place, New Koilaghat, Old Koilaghat (all three around BBD Bagh) and
Rabindra Sadan (opp Metro Station on J.L. Nehru Road). These are open from 0900 to 2000
hours on working days and on Sundays and holidays from 0900 to 1400 hours. Reservation
offices at Dum Dum Rail Station, Bidhan Nagar Rail Station, Ballygunge Rail Station,
Tollygunge Metro Station and Majherhat Rail Station are open from 0900 to 1600 hours
Monday through Saturday. Check office timings with the railways.
